Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, iterating on designs.
Often immigrants are not sure, where to look for information and whom to turn to for legal advice, and they're having a hard time making new friends.
Design an app that helps expats to easily find qualified experts, information and new friends.
DESIGN PROCESS - STEP 1
1. UNDERSTAND
The current global estimate is that there were around 281 million international migrants in the world in 2020, which equates to 3.6% of the global population.
The vast majority of people continue to live in the countries in which they were born, and at the moment 1 in 30 are migrants.
Following the preliminary research, I planned 6 user interviews to gain first-hand knowledge and an in-depth perspective, to better identify and understand user needs and goals, regarding the immigration process.
What challenges did you face when searching for information?
How did this challenges make you feel?
The research also revealed, that people moving to a foreign country need to connect not just with experts, but also need to have a social life, to make friends and keep up with the events and news in their region, in order to easily integrate and overcome the cultural shock.
Based on the user research findings, I have build 2 personas that helped me throughout the project to guide my design decisions and priorities.
DESIGN PROCESS - STEP 2
2. EXPLORE
I analyzed 3 apps and 2 websites to helped me identify any gaps in features that Expats App might address.
What I discovered is that all of them offer guides or articles on bureaucratic processes. The InterNations app is the only one offering a community and the possibility to connect with others and make new friends.
Expatica and I am expat give you the possibility to look for expats service providers and redirect you towards them, but there is nothing integrated to simplify and facilitate the process of connecting the expats with the experts. This then became my opportunity for the solution.
I created a user flow to show user flow makes sense for users to navigate.
Early sketches
I did a quick ideation exercise and explored ways on how to better address users needs.
Low-fidelity wireframes
After reviewing the early sketches, I translated the previous ideas into Lo-Fi wireframes. These designs focused on presenting top experts offering their services to the users.
I created the primary user flow beginning with manually creating and saving a new recipe and after then, from the recipe details page, a user can schedule the recipe and add its ingredients to the shopping list.
DESIGN PROCESS - STEP 3
3. MATERIALIZE
I conducted a remote usability testing with 5 participants and jot down their mistakes, slips, and confusions they expressed in the process. Below is a summary of the findings:
Trust - Users are concerned about how trustfull are the experts and they need a proof of their service quality
Confirm - Users would like to first check the details of the call appointment and after that to confirm
Modify - Users don’t know where to find the call appointment in case they want to cancel or change the dates
Language - Users want to know what languages the experts speak
Based on the insights from the usability studiem, I applied design changes like the flags of the countries to inform users about the language spoken by the experts.
Star rating and testimonials were added to show customer satisfaction and the quality of the services.
Additional design changes included adding an extra step option to confirm the details for a call appointment and a message indicating where could the appointments be found in order to cancel or modify them
Users can now save and organise their recipes in just one place.
The high-fidelity prototype followed the same user flow as the low-fidelity prototype, including design changes made after the usability study.

Foodies is a recipe management app that helps you create, find and organise all your recipes in a single place. It also gives you the tools to plan your meals and create organized shopping lists.
See this projectI recharge my batteries by hanging out with friends and family, hiking, jogging, biking or satisfying my curiosities by reading and listening to podcasts about my favorite topics.
I enjoy travelling and discovering the richness of different cultures. This pushes me sometimes, to get outside of my comfort zone, but allows me to experience different points of view and reflect more on the beauty of life.
I am always thrilled to engage in various construction, home renovation and DIY projects. The sense of fulfillment that accompanies witnessing the progress of the work firsthand is truly gratifying. Moreover, this hands-on involvement has had a notable impact on the advancement of my project management skills.
